Tiktok getting banned again

On April 5th, the app is going dark again. As someone who used to post on tiktok and do brand collabs, it's a little sad. I wasn't a big influencer or anything, but I enjoyed it. I did it for about a year before I went to law school. Anyways, I think it's going to be weird not to have that comfort app anymore, but I think it will be good for me. I spend way to much time on it and I should really be doing something more productive.

I think the part that we don't realize yet is how much more distant we will get. It really did make a community; I mean the whole premise of the app is that your video goes to anyone and everyone. Other apps aren't like that. And if you're the kind of person posting public snapchat stories... you scare me. And, if you're 24+ and snapchat is your primary form of communication, grow up. Anyways, but yeah Instagram and Snapchat will never be like Tiktok. So, we're kind of just losing that ability to casually and socially reach so many people.

What I've been thinking about while getting my last dopamine bursts from the app, is what people are going to do after. How will brands market? Will influencers still be a thing? Because let's be honest, I'll watch an influencer on Tiktok but certainly not on Instagram. It just feels different and more forced in a way. It's hard to explain but I think we all understand.

Here's my prediction if anyone is wondering:

1) I think Youtube is going to grow. I think influencers or the major people you watch on Tiktok are going to flood there. It seems like a natural transition to me.

2) I think blogging could also be a thing again. I hope it does because I really like doing it. I wonder if it will be a marketing tool for companies losing their market base on Tiktok. I think it could be eventually it could be, I will just be curious to see how bloggers advertise or market their blogs.

3) I think people will also spend less time on their phone. Like significantly less. We all know that being on your phone isn't healthy and can really have a damaging effect on your mental health. Constantly being reminded that you don't look the same or have the new 'it girl' thing, or same experience can be a little exhausting. I also think that because there won't be the constant influx of new material flooding everyone's phone, we will become less inclined to pick apart people. You know what I mean, you're scrolling and look at the comments and let's be real, there not all very nice or appropriate. I think in certain cases, people can follow the bandwagon and continue it. I think without that influx of new stuff; there's not a way for that bandwagon to begin. Sure, you can talk to your friends about something you don't like or whatever, but it's not reaching the rest of the world. There are good and bad things with that.

4) I think our attention span will also go up. The thing about Tiktok that no one talks about is the effect it had on our cognitive abilities. Watching a 6 second video and scrolling to the next new 6 second video causes your brain to produce dopamine. Each new thing makes your brain excited. That's why you can sit on the app for hours and not even realize or find it hard to get off the app. By doing this, over time your brain loses its ability to stay focused for extended periods of time. That's why when you sit down to study you swear you're going to work for an hour and in five minutes you're looking at your phone. With time, I think our attention spans will grow because there's an absence in the way to destroy it.

5) Lastly, I think hobbies are going to make a come-back. I think everyone's hobby for the last couple years was the app. Without it people will get bored and start to pursue activities again.

I think it will be interesting to see how people transition. I guess we'll see if any of my predictions come true.

With love and lightheartedness,

Cici
